Influence on the Mucosa of Tracheal Lumen following Tracheotomy with a Couffed Tube

Abstract
Following tracheotomy, unfortunately a few serious complications were developed.
One of the most inevitable complications is known to be the narrowing of the tracheal lumen which is encountered occasionally.
The animals had been kept for 7 days with a cuffed tube in place and then were extubated. And they were killed respectively 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks and 5 weeks later after that.
So the experimental animals were devided into 5 groups according to the durations of time. (group I , group II group III, group IV and group V )
The author observed the healing process of tracheal wall histopathologically after tracheotomy, using a cuffed tube in dogs.
The results obtained are as the following;
1) In group I , 11 and 1, the mucosa of tracheal lumen revealed the swelling, inflammation, ulceration and necrosis and also granulation tissue and beginning of fibrosis were observed.
2) In group IV and V, the injuries of tracheal lumen were recovered progressively by regeneration and scar tissue, and also granulation tissue and fibrosis were observed.
3) The narrowing of tracheal lumen was observed in all group, but as the degree was mild, no clinical symptoms were developed in the majority of experimental animals.
